Why every brand needs a little chaos

Perfect systems are boring. Here is how we leave room for the unexpected in every identity we design.

Every brand guideline we have ever loved had a page that said “break this rule when it matters.” Systems give a brand consistency, but a little chaos is what makes people remember it.

Design the exceptions

When we build an identity, we deliberately design the moments where the system bends: a logo that glitches on launch day, a colour that only appears once a year, a typeface that stretches when the music gets loud.

Controlled mess

Chaos without intention is just noise. The trick is to define the edges of the playground — and then let the brand run wild inside it.
